Arsenal’s Reiss Nelson has been nominated for the Bundesliga’s ‘rookie of the season award’. The 19-year-old has followed in the path of some other English youngsters and has turned to the German league in search of regular game time. Though, unlike some other players, he will return to the Premier League in the summer after a season long loan spell at TSG Hoffenheim.
Nelson won the league’s rookie of the month award back in October in order to be nominated for the season’s award. Three goals and six assists within the month made sure that the youngster impressed in his early days in Germany. Since winning the monthly accolade, he has gone on to score a further three goals and appear in 18 of the remaining league games as well as the club’s three remaining Champions League ties.
The rookie award is designed for players aged 23 or under who are playing their first season in the Bundesliga. The monthly winners are nominated for the season’s award, which is down to a public vote.
The Arsenal youngster has a lot of competition if he is to win the accolade, including Fortuna Düsseldorf’s Dodi Lukebakio, who is on loan from fellow Premier League side Watford. The striker has scored 10 goals in 31 Bundesliga appearances this season.
Other nominees are VfB Stuttgart striker Nicolas Gonzalez, Eintracht Frankfurt defender Evan Ndicka, VfB Stuttgart defender Ozan Kabak, FC Nürnberg midfielder Matheus Pereira and Borussia Dortmund defender Achraf Hakimi, who was the only one of the seven nominees to win the monthly award on more than one occasion.
