Sunderland AFC news and transfers RECAP: Jack Ross sets players target

Benji Kimpioka told: Sign up or end Sunderland career on loan

Sunderland plan to get tough with their most promising youngsters this summer, after telling Benji Kimpioka and five others to sign contract extensions or not play for the club again.

Chairman Stewart Donald told the latest Roker Rapport podcast six youngsters have been offered new deals to prevent them entering the final 12 months of contracts.

Eager to avoid a repeat of the situation with Josh Maja in January, Donald has warned if they do not sign, they will be sent on loan to run down their deals elsewhere.

Clubs are entitled to compensation if under-24 players leave at the end of contracts, but it is kept deliberately low. Top-scorer Maja used that to get a move to Bordeaux which earned the Black Cats just £1.5m up front. In July, Joel Asoro joined Swansea City for £2m . Both players’ deals were due to run until this summer.
