Real Sociedad v Real Madrid 12 May 2019

Result: Real Sociedad 3-1 Real Madrid

Date: 12 May 2019

Venue: Anoeta Stadium

Real Madrid’s woes in La Liga continued as they went down 3-1 against Real Sociedad in the penultimate round on Sunday evening.

Los Blancos manager Zinedine Zidane made four changes from their victory over Villarrea, once again Gareth Bale was left out of the squad amid reports of a departure at the end of the season.

Brahim Diaz gave Los Blancos an early lead after finding the back of the net in the sixth minute with strike from a tight angle after he was teed up by Karim Benzema.

Sociedad showed the hunger to get back in the game, but they had to wait until the 26th minute when Mikel Merino eventually levelled matters after turning home a cross from Willian Jose.

There was drama in the last five minutes of the first stanza as Madrid went down to ten men after Jesus Vallejo was red-carded for blocking Jose’s goal-bound shot with his hand, but the Brazilian forward could not capitalise from the resultant penalty as his spot-kick was saved by Los Blancos shot-stopper Thibaut Courtois.

Sociedad had the upper hand in the early stages of the second stanza, which resulted in the host taking the lead through Joseba Zaldua, who powered home a cross from Ruben Pardo three minutes before the hour.

Ander Barrenetxea extended the lead in the 67th minute with a strike towards the near post after latching on to a rebound from Mikel Oyarzabal’s shot that initially crashed against the post.

Zidane looked for creativity upfront with 13 minutes remaining and brought on Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior in place of Marco Asensio to spark a comeback.

Although Vinicius brought some spark with tricks in the last third, he could not carve out clear chances for the visitors as the encounter ended 3-1 in favour of Sociedad.

Los Blancos remain third on the table, while Sociedad occupy eighth place with one round of matches remaining.
