Former Chelsea, Leicester City and Fulham manager Claudio Ranieri is reportedly an option for Scottish Premiership champions Celtic.

With Celtic seemingly in need of a young, hungry manager with fresh ideas and plenty of years in the tank, reports linking the Premiership champions with a 67-year-old veteran have gone down like a lead balloon.

According to Calciomercato, Celtic have added none other than Claudio Ranieri to their managerial shortlist as they scour the market for a man capable of replicating and building on Brendan Rodgers’ success at Parkhead. But it would be an understatement to suggest that a number of supporters have been left distinctly underwhelmed.

Yes, Ranieri pulled off a miracle when he defied the 500/1 odds to guide Leicester City to the Premier League title in 2016. Yes, he has an excellent track record at some of Europe’s biggest clubs, from Chelsea to Valencia, Inter Milan to Roma, Juventus to Atletico Madrid.

Leicester City FC's Italian manager Claudio Ranieri (2nd R), the club owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha (C), his son and vice-chairman Aiyawatt 'Top' Srivaddhanaprabha (2nd L), team captain...

But, apart from that remarkable season at the King Power Stadium, the affable Italian’s best days appear to be behind him. That dismal spell at Fulham, where Ranieri won just three of 17 games, is unfortunately still fresh in the memory.

And with the Italian set to turn 68 later this year, he would surely only be a short-term option for a club who need to think of the future.
